Summer Activities to do with Kids and Water

Summer is here in full effect! The kids will be done with school in the coming weeks which is always exciting for them! Now you might be starting to think of ideas to keep them occupied. Below are a few fun activities that all involve water!

  • Create a water obstacle course in your yard by setting up a sprinkler, slip and slides, water dumps, and more!
  • Do some water science experiments – let your kids learn about surface tension, absorption, buoyancy and more fascinating qualities of water.
  • Set up a water painting station and let the kids use paintbrushes and sponges to ‘paint’ the sidewalk, driveway, or patio! After they are done, watch as their designs slowly evaporate.
  • Make DIY sponge bombs by using colourful sponges and elastic bands, then place water buckets around the yard to reload your water-soaked sponges!

Take this summer opportunity to let your kids learn and have fun exploring with water. It is also very important to be teaching about water safety as well!

Secondary Suites in your home

What is a Secondary Suite?

A secondary suite is another living unit inside a primary residence or in an accessory building on the property. Additional living units have to have at least a kitchen, one bedroom, one bathroom, and a living area.

Secondary suites have become more and more popular recently as they provide additional housing for family members or tenants. Having another living unit can also provide you with additional income.

Secondary Suite Regulations

A secondary suite has to comply with zoning requirements set out by your municipality/city, the Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, and the Electrical Safety Authority.

Depending on your municipality secondary suites may also be required to be registered with the municipality/city. Always confirm with your local municipality what you must do for your secondary suite to be considered legal.

More Considerations for Secondary Suites

Another thing to consider when thinking of secondary suites is your home insurance. You should be mindful of your insurance agreement and what you might need to have a secondary suite covered. You may also need to consider tenant insurance as well.

BBQ Tips for Summer Time in Peterborough County

Get ready for summertime weather and barbecuing your meals! Here are a few tips to help you master the art of BBQ…

  • Always preheat your grill – this helps to ensure your meat cooks evenly and helps to prevent sticking.
  • Play around with flavours – there are so many different types of rubs, marinades, and spices you can try out.
  • Use the right tools- when barbecuing, you may need tools like a meat thermometer, grill scraper, or tongs!
  • Manage your heat – learn what types of meat need higher temperatures and how your barbeque heats up.
  • Let your meat rest – this lets the juices settle and the temperature even out.

You can be creative when barbequing. Throwing some sides on the grill like corn, bell peppers, zucchini and more can change the flavours and be a new experience to eating the same vegetables.

Your Property Taxes in Ontario

Your Property Taxes! Let’s jump right in and talk about property taxes. You may wonder, ‘Why do I have to pay property taxes?’ or you might think, ‘How do they calculate property taxes?’ I hope to share some insight on this topic with you below.

Here’s how your property taxes are calculated. Different factors mentioned below are taken into consideration when calculating your property tax. Those factors are…

  • Property Type
  • Property Assessment
  • Municipal Tax Rate
  • Education Tax Rate

Another point, property tax is calculated by adding the municipal tax rate and education tax rate together and then multiplying the assessed value of your property. In fact, you can find your municipal and education tax rates on your municipalities website. Your property’s assessed value will then come from MPAC. If you are curious, after you have these numbers, you can then give yourself an estimate of your property taxes for the year.

Ontario Tax Rates

As you may know, cities in Ontario have different tax rates. As a result, Windsor had the highest tax rate in 2022, and Toronto had the lowest in Ontario. Listed below are a few areas in Ontario. As you can see, the tax rates are all different.

  • Windsor – 1.853760%
  • North Bay – 1.619120%
  • Peterborough – 1.491444%
  • Hamilton – 1.245249%
  • Ajax – 1.116443%
  • Newmarket – 0.81062%
  • Oakville – 0.732324%
  • Toronto – 0.631933%

Are you surprised by any of the property tax rates?  Windsor had the highest rates did surprise me. After all, if you have any questions about your property taxes, contact me, and I can guide you to an appropriate third party!
